Canonwell guide
Connect with MCP
Let an AI agent save a completed session directly, without showing you a JSON handoff.
Connect an agent
Connect an MCP client to your Canonwell deployment’s /api/mcp endpoint and complete the OAuth authorization flow. The client receives only the scopes you approve.
Before play, ask the agent to use chronicle_get_play_context. This gives it the current campaign situation without asking it to recreate history.
Save safely
Before saving, an agent should list campaigns, resolve the exact campaign ID, list sessions, and then call chronicle_finalize_session with the complete canonical payload.
Finalization only creates new history. chronicle_replace_session is reserved for an explicit correction and preserves campaign, session, and session-number identity.
Resolve campaign references
Use chronicle_search_resources to resolve a remembered character, location, thread, faction, item, challenge, or lore entry. Search results include a stable arcstate:// resource URI and identify the campaign when names overlap.
An MCP client can read that URI for a concise current reference. Resource reads require the same authorized Canonwell connection and never expose another user’s campaign data.
In the ChatGPT desktop app, type @ after connecting Canonwell to search and insert a campaign resource directly. Other MCP clients use the same resource search and URI flow through standard tools.
